Irish troubadour stretches out toward soul and blues. Glen Hansard has been a steadily prolific singer-songwriter for 25 years, first with the Dublin indie-rock act the Frames and later as half of Oscar-winning folk duo the Swell Season. On his second solo effort, Hansard explores fresh sounds, from plain-spoken blues ( Wedding Ring ) to traditional-minded Irish ballads ( McCormack’s Wall ). The highlight: Her Mercy, a soul showstopper that starts small and builds toward a parade of horns and cathartic pleading. Yet as the LP progresses, Hansard too often lapses into his trademark brooding melodrama - an easy fallback for a singer who’s at his.

Didn’t he ramble Didn’t he roam Didn’t he wander so far from his home And didn’t he go down in the dark for too long And lo we look good now Singing his song Didn’t he teach us Didn’t we learn Didn’t he reach out beyond all return And didn’t he go down. take it all to the grave And don't we fare well now With the choice that he made. But didn’t he ramble Didn’t he roam Didn’t he wander so far from home Didn’t he teach us Didn’t we learn Didn’t he reach out beyond all return
Didn't He Ramble shows that as a performer and a songwriter, Hansard can create powerful and satisfying work that's up to the standard he set with the Frames, and this is a step up from 2012's impressive but uneven Rhythm and Repose. So much of the dialogue in Didn’t He Ramble is filled with empathy and understanding, highlighted by Hansard’s signature wail, no longer lamenting heartache, but straining to encourage the subject of his stories.
