His Irish-born mother, Marguerite Haymes (1894-1987), was a well-known vocal coach and instructor. These historic recordings have been sonically cleaned from the original 78 rpm acetates for this 52-track boxed set, which includes many of the hits recorded by band leader Glenn Miller during his short career. Duke Ellington and his Kentucky Club Orchestra grew to a group of ten players; they developed their own sound by displaying the non-traditional expression of Ellington's arrangements, the street rhythms of Harlem, and the exotic-sounding trombone growls and wah-wahs, high-squealing trumpets, and sultry saxophone blues licks of the band members. It introduced Billie Holiday, and won an Academy Award as the best musical short subject. Ellington and his Orchestra also appeared in the features Murder at the Vanities and Belle of the Nineties (both 1934)
