Before and After Science is the fifth studio album by British musician Brian Eno. Produced by Eno and Rhett Davies, it was originally released by Polydor Records in December 1977 in the UK and by US Island soon after. Guest musicians from the United Kingdom and Germany helped with the album, including members of Roxy Music, Free, Fairport Convention, Can and Cluster.

Before and After Science is really a study of "studio composition" whereby recordings are created by deconstruction and elimination: tracks are recorded and assembled in layers, then selectively subtracted one after another, resulting in a composition and sound quite unlike that at the beginning of the process. Despite the album's pop format, the sound is unique and strays far from the mainstream. Eno also experiments with his lyrics, choosing a sound-over-sense approach.

Brian Eno’s run of rock albums in the ’70s was an unprecedented achievement in music built on aleatory synth settings, fiery guitar work, subconscious lyrics, and of course, Oblique Strategies. And he tinkered endlessly with the raw materials that would eventually come together as Before and After Science. The legend is that Eno worked on somewhere between 100 and 120 songs for the album, although only the ten that ended up on it have ever surfaced. There are no bonus tracks on any of the new releases, not even Eno’s non-album singles of the era, the delightfully hormone-crazed 1974 glam-rock yodel Seven Deadly Finns and a 1975 cover of The Lion Sleeps Tonight.

Topped and tailed by ‘Here He Comes’ and ‘Spider And I’, Side Two of Before And After Science utilises what, for Eno, are quite conventional, linear melodies. But in their understatement, a wellspring of implied emotion broils beneath the still surface.
