Braver Than We Are is the twelfth studio album by American singer Meat Loaf, released in Europe on September 9, 2016 by Caroline International S&D and released in the United States on September 16, 2016 by 429 Records. Meat Loaf first announced that he had begun working with Jim Steinman again on The Jonathan Ross Show in April 2013.

Braver Than We Are is apparently Meat Loaf’s last album. Even if that wasn’t the intention, once the fanbase gets hold of this, that will be the end result. This is a career killer. The bravest aspect of this release is how anyone other than Meat Loaf would want to put their name on it. And I don’t say any of this lightly. Now, before the abuse from card carrying Meat Loaf fan club members starts – people who maybe have never read this site before – let’s get a couple of facts straight. I’ve got every Meat album too. We know they are a little hit and miss, but a couple of his recent efforts since Bat 2 were pretty damn good.

This 2016 album reunited the theatrical Bat Out of Hell rocker with songwriter/producer Jim Steinman-and the results are suitably Wagnerian. Opening opus Who Needs the Young is vaudeville with volume, while soul sisters Ellen Foley and Karla DeVito wail along with Meat Loaf against the thrilling wall-of-sound production of "Going All the Way Is Just the Start (A Song in 6 Movements). Bat Out Of Hell 3 came a decade too early. This should be it. The first two Bat albums consisted of Jim Steinman songs. The third broke that tradition; half of the songs were composed by other people; but this album, the title of which comes from a track I’ll get to shortly, takes it back. Every song is composed by Steinman, though they’re not really new. Most were released or performed years ago by other singers, the oldest going back to the 1970s. Listen for a epic entitled Going All The Way Is Just The Start, a quote of which also titles the album. It’s one of the best songs, if not the best song, Meat Loaf has ever sang and Jim Steinman has ever composed, an operatic classic. Why it doesn’t start the set, like the similarly majestic Anything For Love did on Bat 2, is a mystery to me. Godz, a quirky military anthem, is fun, but Going All The Way is in a class by itself.
