This 19-track compilation focuses on Elmore James' crucial sessions recorded for the Modern Records subsidiaries Meteor and Flair between 1952 and 1956. At the time of these recordings, the distorted amplified sound of James' slide guitar with his unmistakable electrified Robert Johnson lick was helping map out the postwar blues idiom with such classics as "I Believe," "Blues Before Sunrise," "Wild About You," "Mean & Evil," and the extraordinary reworking of Robert Johnson's "Dust My Broom" into "Dust My Blues

One of the greatest blues musicians and singers ever, Elmore James bridged the pre-war intensity and rhythmic impetus of Delta blues with the fierce heat of post-World War 2 musical urbanisation. His hoarse, rasping, crying vocals, tough slashing slide guitar, booting (often) saxophone-led support combos and terrific repertoire, earned Elmore the kind of legendary status that made his music a key influence on the 1960s R&B blues booms (both Rolling Stone Brian Jones and Fleetwood Mac's Jeremy Spencer were big, big fans) and beyond

It essentially duplicates The Sky Is Crying: The History of Elmore James, but must be judged as slightly inferior, as that other compilation has 21 tracks. The puzzle is that The Sky Is Crying, like The Very Best Of, is also on Rhino, and was still in print when this compilation was released in 2000

Mississippi-born singer-guitarist Elmore James had one immortal lick: the l slide riff in his 1951 adaptation of Robert Johnson's "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom. But it was a great lick," says slide guitarist Derek Trucks. As the absolute boss of his bands, including the legendary lineups of the Mothers of Invention, Zappa fused doo-wop, urban blues, big-band jazz and orchestral modernism with an iron hand. As a guitarist, he drew from all of those sources, then improvised with a furious and genuine delight. Atkins could be laid-back and restrained (as heard on iconic recordings like Hank Williams' "Your Cheatin' Heart," Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" and several of the Everly Brothers' early hits). But his own instrumental-heavy solo albums are an endless bag of guitar tricks, mixing harmonics, arpeggios and pure notes with a brilliantly clear tone.
