Into the valley of the dolls Into the valley of the dolls As into the valley of the dolls.
But ridicule should not be so readily heaped on former employers, Generation X. Never in the same league as the Clash or the Pistols, the group nevertheless kicked up a fair amount of dust and recorded some memorable singles and a classy debut album. They were, after all, the first of the punk bands to truly embrace the rock industry and all its trappings. But on this, their second album, the band's limitations are self-evident

Valley of the Dolls is the second studio long-player by the British post-punk band Generation X, which was produced by Ian Hunter. Valley of the Dolls was recorded at Wessex Sound Studios in Islington in October 1978. The record's working title was 'Intercourse (Old Meets New)', which was superseded by a name taken from a 1966 novel. Ian Hunter was commissioned as the record's producer at Tony James's request, from having been a fan of his work with Mott the Hoople in the early 1970's.
Valley of the Dolls', Generation X's much derided, Ian Hunter-produced follow-up to one of the best albums of 1978, has stood up better than most thought. This is what happens when you have the gall to try and follow a classic. The 2nd album was always my favourite of the two because of the stories within the songs. Well having not heard this stuff in 20yrs+ I was amazed at how listenable it all still is and the audio is great too, not at all muddy or flat. The guitar work is really far far better than I recalled, they were a tight band full stop and already had plenty of form before they formed Generation X. With hindsight and some growing up to reflect upon I hear so many new things in these two albums that I just couldn't have appreciated at the time.
