Description

Unlike the previous two Ace Newbeats CDs (Bread and Butter/Big Beat Sounds and Run Baby Run), however, this disc doesn't reissue '60s Newbeats LPs with bonus tracks, instead gathering a surprisingly large quantity of rarities, including 1969-1972 non-LP singles; both sides of the four 1963-1965 singles billed to Dean & Mark, a duo (Lewis "Dean" Mathis. and Marcus Mathis) who comprised two-thirds of the Newbeats; and both sides of five 1963-1965 singles by the third Newbeat, Larry Henley

Vicki Lawrence - The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia.

The Newbeats were an American popular music vocal trio, led by Larry Henley, best known for their 1964 hit, "Bread and Butter", which was released on the Hickory Records label. The group's members were: Larry Henley (born Lawrence Joel Henley, June 30, 1937, Arp, Texas, United States; died December 18, 2014). Dean Mathis (born Louis Aldine Mathis, March 17, 1939, Hahira, Georgia). Mark Mathis (born Marcus Felton Mathis, February 9, 1942, Hahira, Georgia).

That they are chiefly remembered for just their massive hits Bread And Butter and Run, Baby, Run (Back Into My Arms) is a bit unfortunate – especially for those who have never heard many (or any) of their other great 45s and albums, and who are thus unaware of just how versatile Messrs Mathis, Mathis and Henley were, individually and collectively. Our third and final instalment of the Newbeats story brings us to the very end of the 1960s, and to their successful attempt(s) to meet the Sound Of The 70s head-on. For many Newbeats collectors, this final volume will be the most desirable of the three. You want highlights, we got ‘em. Our title track, 1969’s Groovin’ Out On Life – written by New Orleans swamp-pop rocker Bobby Charles – was not the US hit it ought to have been.

Bread and Butter" is a 1964 song by The Newbeats. Written by Larry Parks and Jay Turnbow, "Bread and Butter" was the group's first and most popular hit. "Bread and Butter" served as The Newbeats' demo in an effort to obtain a recording contract with Hickory Records. They were then asked to formally record the track for the label. The opening two-chord piano riff and the lead falsetto singing voice of Larry Henley are notable features of the song.

However, its influence extended far beyond the confines of the Hot 100, when a note-for note reggae version by Hopeton Lewis became a massive Jamaican hit in 1970. As I said earlier, the Newbeats covered all the bases, all of the time and this CD proves that from start to finish.
