Phil Chevron performing "Song of the Big Shot" from Brecht, Weill's "Happy End" featured on the album "Songs from Bill's Dance Hall" (1981).
Happy End is a three-act musical comedy by Kurt Weill, Elisabeth Hauptmann, and Bertolt Brecht which first opened in Berlin at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm on September 2, 1929. It closed after seven performances. In 1977 it premiered on Broadway, where it ran for 75 performances. After the success of Weill and Brecht's previous collaboration, The Threepenny Opera, the duo devised this musical, written by Elisabeth Hauptmann under the pseudonym of Dorothy Lane.

In August 1981, Bowie had begun rehearsals to appear in the BBC version of Baal. The lyrics to the songs were all translated by Ralph Manheim and John Willett. Dominic Muldowney provided all new musical settings, except for "The Drowned Girl", which was a setting by Kurt Weill done originally for Das Berliner Requiem. Ballad of the Adventurers is Baal’s aggressive lament to the death of his mother. The Drowned Girl relates the suicide of one of Baal’s conquests – a video clip for this song was shot by David Mallet at the same time as the one for Wild is the Wind. The Dirty Song is a short number, with Baal humiliating his lover Sophie. His performance as Baal was transmitted on February 2, 1982, and RCA issued the EP to coincide with this.
Baal was not one of Bertolt Brecht's most appealing visions. The tale of a dissolute itinerant wretch whose natural talent for composing amoral ditties was mere accompaniment to his life of debauchery, it was the saga, according to David Bowie, of the original Super Punk - which is doubtless what attracted him to it, when he was offered the title role in a 1982 BBC TV play. Bowie perform five songs during the course of the play, each of which coupled Brecht's original lyric (as translated by John Willett) to a contemporary Dominic Muldowney arrangement.

Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) was an important German poet and playwright in the second quarter of the 20th century. This recording of selected poems and songs is performed by theater critic, singer, and teacher Eric Bentley, who is considered to be a preeminent expert on Brecht. Eighteen of the 19 selections in this recording were translated and adapted by Bentley, who also plays piano and harmonium. Of interest are the performances of two songs from The Threepenny Opera, perhaps Brecht’s best known musical: Mack the Knife (the last three stanzas only) and Ballad of Sexual Submissiveness,.
One: The Race Through The Desert. Two: The End Of A Much-Travelled Road. A2. Three: The Dismissal Of The Guide At Station Han. A3. Four: A Conversation In Dangerous Territory. The Song Of The Tribunals.
