Description

The Thom Bell Sessions (internationally titled as The Thom Bell Sessions '77) is an EP recorded by Elton John in the second half of 1977, but was not released by MCA Records until June 1979. The project was a departure for John and his band was not used for these sessions. Until that time, he had worked almost exclusively with lyricist Bernie Taupin and record producer Gus Dudgeon.

In 1977 Elton selected producer Thom Bell (The Spinners, The Stylistics) to flavour his music with the Philadelphia Sound. In 2003, a remix of Are You Ready For Love reached in the UK Singles and Billboard Hot Dance Club charts. 1. Nice And Slow 4:41. 2. Country Love Song 5:03. 3. Shine On Through 7:45. 5. Are You Ready For Love 8:16. 6. Three Way Love Affair 5:00. Music & Lyrics by ELTON JOHN, BERNIE TAUPIN, THOM BELL, GARY OSBORNE, JOSEPH J. JEFFERSON, LEROY BELL & CASEY JAMES Arranged, Conducted and Produced by THOM BELL Recorded at Kay Smith Studio, Seattle, WA, US; Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia, PA, US.

When the CD version of that EP was issued, the other three previously unissued tunes documented during those sessions were released. Notable among them are a Taupin/John leftover titled "Nice and Slow" - which Thom Bell also rearranged - as well as a John ballad co-written with Gary Osborne titled "Shine On Through. This track would resurface as the leadoff track on John's A Single Man in a much more stark and moody musical setting.

This album has an unusual history. It was Elton John's first project immediately after his underappreciated masterwork, Blue Moves. Contrary to what others have written, Elton had not yet entered a period of declining popularity or sales when he recorded with Thom Bell. Blue Moves was a platinum album and was preceded with the non-album mega-hit "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" which racked up 4 weeks at in the . in the summer of 1976. For whatever reasons, Elton ultimately decided not to issue the Thom Bell Sessions. An Elton- Bernie Taupin song, "Ego" was issued as a single in April 1978 and peaked at #34.
