Terje Rypdal chronology. Whenever I Seem to Be Far Away (1974). After the Rain (1976) Contents.

Whenever I Seem to Be Far Away. Whenever I Seem to Be Far Away is the fourth solo album by Norwegian jazz guitarist Terje Rypdal recorded in 1974 and released on the ECM label. All compositions by Terje Rypdal. Silver Bird is Heading for the Sun" - 14:05. Whenever I Seem to Be Far Away" - 17:37.

Whenever I Seem So Far Away" opens with sombre violin sounds followed by clarinet then violin again. Strings and a dark mood is set before 3 minutes. Clarinet is fairly prominant until we get a change 7 minutes in as the sound gets fuller. Terje starts to take over with his guitar as it cries out in the darkness, especially 14 minutes in. A calm with violin 15 minutes in followed by clarinet 17 minutes i. he guitar ends this one though the way it should. This was the second Terje Rypdal album I bought, in 1994, after Odyssey. This album clearly explores two different paths. The first half is very much fusion, with Mellotron rearing its head from time to time.

Christensen was a familiar member of Rypdal's group, having appeared on his first ECM album, "Terje Rypdal", his second, "What Comes After", as well as "Waves" in 1978. Likewise, Sveinung Hovensjo appeared on "What Comes After" earlier in 1973, along with the double-opus "Odyssey" in 1975 and "Waves" later. Their musical empathy with Rypdal on "Silver Bird" and "The Hunt" is most revealing and satisfying. Knutsen is great, as well, on electric piano and the polyphonic mellotron.

The Hunt 5:21 B. Whenever I Seem To Be Far Away 17:38. Tracklist: A1. Silver Bird Is Heading For The Sun A2. The Hunt B.
