Miles Davis's new players just didn't have the sort of experience that would have enabled them to quickly find a common groove. Mr. Davis made his definitive statements in the jazz idiom long ago, and realized his stated ambition to play the most ferocious rock music around on the blistering ''Dark Magus . The ways in which the new album differs from its immediate predecessors are subtle, but significant. On the earlier albums, Mr. Davis structured and mixed his music to reflect the sort of balance achieved by a band, and more particularly, by a rhythm section, improvising in live performance.
