Sad Sack (Shank) - 5:45 0. This CD reissue is as good as any of their dates, featuring a particularly strong lineup: trumpeter Conte Candoli, either Frank Rosolino or Stu Williamson on trombone, altoist Bud Shank, tenor saxophonist Bob Cooper, pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Rumsey, and drummer Stan Levey. With the exception of three Cooper originals, most of the songs hark back to the swing era (including "Isn't It Romantic," "East of the Sun" and "Dickie's.

Born in Brawley, California, Rumsey first began playing the piano, followed by the drums and finally the bass. After jobs with Vido Musso and Johnnie Davis, Rumsey became part of Stan Kenton's first band. Rumsey soon left Kenton after an argument. He played with Charlie Barnet and Barney Bigard before taking a short hiatus from music.

The band at the time consisted of trumpeter Shorty Rogers, trombonist Milt Bernhart, Jimmy Giuffre and Bob Cooper on tenors, pianist Frank Patchen, bassist/leader Rumsey, and drummer Shelly Manne. In addition to cool jazz numbers, they perform the satirical R&B romp "Big Girl" and (with Carlos Vidal on conga) the rhythmic "Viva Zapata.
