A Grand Don't Come for Free is the second studio album from British garage and hip hop act The Streets. It was released on 17 May 2004 and is listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. It is a rap opera which follows the story of its protagonist's relationship with a girl named Simone, alongside the mysterious loss of £1,000 from his home (the eponymous "grand").

15 years on, A Grand Don't Come For Free is still one of a kind. The album was nominated for the Mercury, went platinum in the UK and boasted four back-to-back top 40 singles – something an English rapper hadn't achieved at that level up to that point in time. One can look at this as a major turning point in the history of Britain's relationship with hip-hop – which, up to that point, had mostly produced hits in the genre that were mocking of it (see Morris Minor & The Majors' regrettable Stutter Rap). On May 17, 2004, Mike Skinner released A Grand Don't Come for Free. While Original Pirate Material took in generalities of the everyday – or, as Skinner put it, a day in the life of a geezer – Grand was a record that was defined by conceptuality and storytelling.

Like Damien Rice’s honest and pretty O, A Grand Don’t Come for Free allows Skinner to live-and relive-the minutiae of a failed relationship. But this is a less monotonous, more open-minded record; Skinner is every bit as self-involved as Rice, but his ruminations go beyond speaking to broken hearts. Skinner’s mad rhymes are positively, excitingly anthropological; they study and illuminate the culture that surrounds the broken heart. But don’t think that Skinner carries on or bemoans the social underdevelopment of a Blair-forsaken environment. But anyone who’s been clamoring for Titus Andronicus to make a uniformly hard and fast punk album like this one hasn’t been paying attention to what the band is about. One of Titus Andronicus’s greatest strengths has always been the dichotomies in their music-those juxtapositions of the quiet and loud, the portentous and the irreverent.

The exact opposite of background music, A Grand Don’t Come for Free demands the same attention as a movie, and that’s why some people will hate it while others will find it uniquely riveting. this album is truly original and uniqe i give it 10 out of ten because i am totally in love with this album. 0 of 0 users found this helpful. 10. the whole album story is greatly depicted, very nice tracks and awesome beats, esp "blinded by the light" and "dry your eyes". 9. It took guts to make a concept album in the genre, great stuff. Americans don't get this record.

This actually looks like a repress from the original stampers! Reason being on the original edition there is a strange pattern on the track “Blinded By The Lights”, and it’s also present on this copy, just not as noticeable... it doesn’t affect the sound of the track though
Jugore Jugore
Damn ???????? Indeed it seems like it's present on all copies, I got a replacement copy for the first one I got and the new copy skips as well on that part. I don't know what to do with it...
Dyni Dyni
Yeah that’s the one, it’s present on the original 2004 edition, although it doesn’t skip on either pressing with my copies
Kison Kison
Are you referring to this? https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZsmW6NCxHZ3H5Xo27 Cause my turntable skips on that part....

My copy does not match the runouts listed here at all, nor does it match any other copy on Discogs. My copy has the following matrix runouts (all etched):Side A: GUY-THEEXCHANGE (S.D.) B400915-01 A1 Side B: B400915-01 B1 GUY - THE 'EXCHANGE'Side C: B400915-02 C1 GUY - THE 'EXCHANGE'Side D: B400915-02 D1 GUY - THE 'EXCHANGE'Does anyone have this version? Or does your version match the runouts in this listing? Could this be a different version not yet listed?

The soundtrack to my 2004. Some of the tunes sound a little dated & basic now but grime was the big thing around these times so I suppose some of it was based on that kind of sound. I love the fact you can listen to, and enjoy the tunes individually,or listen to them on the album a story told in sequence. There was nothing else like it at the time, the way Mike Skinner tells tales we can all relate to in his unique style, and there hasn't been anything like it since. Many have tried though. Definitely worth a purchase, if not only to get an idea of what it was like in the early to mid noughties

Love this album. Maybe even better than 'original pirate material'. A classical music friend amusingly commented that the intermission tracks are like recitative. If you can name a more ambient garage track than 'blinded by the lights' I'd like to hear it.
