On Worlds Apart, they remain hard to classify, except on their own terms. Though the Trail of Dead sound as angry, regretful, and hopeful as they did when they started, this is a much more polished album than their breakthrough, Source Tags & Codes, and their fiery sound is tempered by nods to '70s prog and album rock. But the band's attack on complacency extends to their own music: Worlds Apart might be a noble failure, but it would probably be worse if it just revisited previous successes.

Trail of Dead has made the album of its career. Worlds Apart is not perfect but it is a fantastic follow upOne of the most inexplicably panned records (by critics not fans) I can remember. There are a handful of songs that are absolute classics (Caterwaul, Let It Dive, Rest Will Follow, A Classic Arts Showcase) and while the back end tails off in a different direction it is still majestic and arranged beautifully. I'll never understand what these guys did to turn off all of the hipster blogs that have been panning them.

In short, Worlds Apart comes across as the greatest hits of a forgotten indie rock band, and not a major achievement from a current one, and sure, there are some memorable songs, but there are also a few too many tracks that will be inevitably skipped over. Put another way, it's like the question that arises when listening to the Clash's final record, Cut The Crap. Sure, it's a passable enough record from a great band, but it's no London Calling. I guess the question is, where is the Trail Of Dead's Mick Jones and why did they kick him out?

Trail of Dead released Worlds Apart on January 25, 2005. Music videos were filmed for singles "And the Rest Will Follow" and "Caterwaul". The band also added live keyboardist David Longoria to their touring lineup. After their overseas tour ended on March 15, 2007, the Trail of Dead returned to the studio to begin recording their sixth record. In October they supported the virtual band Dethklok on an Adult Swim college tour In early 2008, Trail of Dead went back into the studio, without a record contract.
