Knowing how Jurado's voice would develop in the future (smooth, nuanced and deeply soulful) it's strange listening to him grapple with it here. He really benefitted from the '90s sound passing - the subsequent revival of indie folk would show him the way. Still, this has its moments and even at its worst it manages to stay endearing rather than in any way annoying.
