Ippocalyptica Suffering Hour’s rather impressive debut, In Passing Ascension, should have received way more kudos than was the case, as I cannot readily recall a death metal debut album of such skill, power, and variety being released in 2017. While stalwarts such as Immolation and Nile, legendary though they are, remain content to revisit the same territory over and over (even if they do it really well), Suffering Hour is part of the new breed - think Convulsing, Abyssal, and their ilk - that is pushing death metal into new realms, even if they are admittedly all doing it through a blackened.

An entirely new Suffering Hour is built and then destroyed within this song and the result is a certain positive result for the rabid fan of their first album but, it may not lend itself to repetition as much as the full-length had. There is some discomfort in the nearly four minute introduction to Dwell that is both throwaway and adept at the same time with any negative aspect being vacuumed up into the sheer force of the untamed precision of the sky-blurring death metal that follows. As my mind pared down Dwell into its finest eight or so minutes it did absolutely reveal itself as a worthy step in the development of Suffering Hour. It won’t appear meant to surprise but instead to delight the listener with an acrobatic display of transitional fluidity where the rhythmic flow of the piece is perhaps its only reasonable point of interest.

Suffering Hour are a death metal/black metal band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band originally formed in 2011 as Compassion Dies, before renaming to Suffering Hour in 2013. They released their EP "Foreseeing Exemptions to a Dismal Beyond" in January 2014, and released their debut full-length album "In Passing Ascension" in May 2017.
