Saint-Saens actually composed five symphonies during his very long life (1835 to 1921), but two of the symphonies were never published and have rarely been performed, let alone recorded. In the middle 1970s, the great French conductor Jean Martinon decided to record all five of Saint-Saens' symphonies, using the French National Radio and Television Orchestra, for EMI Classics. These recordings originally appeared on LPs, since CD technology did not yet exist. I purchased the recordings, mostly out of curiosity, and was really delighted with all five symphonies.

The symphonies of Saint-Saëns remain sadly neglected, despite the theoretical popularity, on disc at least, of the Third and last–the so-called Organ Symphony. Martinon, Jean (conductor). Orchestre National de l'ORTF. Musical Heritage Society - 525324F.
