The Temptations' "Run Away Child, Running Wild" was a bookmark for the often-imitated Motown group. It was their last number one R&B hit of the '60s, and it was the first Dennis Edwards lead smash after having several fronted by David Ruffin's lead vocals. More commonly known though is the fact that it signaled an infusion of the rock/funk/R&B/psychedelia fusion popularized by Sly and the Family Stone. The experimentation paid with the track earning Motown its first Grammy award. The track also mirrored a widening social consciousness in the group's material as the lyric dealt with the subject of teenaged runaways.
