The Detroit Experiment is a 2003 studio album by The Detroit Experiment, a collaborative project including DJ/producer Carl Craig, saxophonist Bennie Maupin, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, pianist Geri Allen, and violinist Regina Carter. It peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart, as well as number 24 on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. It is the second entry in a series of albums, the first being The Philadelphia Experiment (2001) and the third being The Harlem Experiment (2007).

Somewhat unsurprisingly, the references to Detroit are all but countless; they're in the song titles, they're in the actual songs, and they're also peppered throughout the lyrics of "The Way We Make Music" (female MC Invincible scores bonus points for throwing in the New Dance Show). Though it's dotted by some merely pleasant but unengaging work, the remainder makes this unique record fascinating for music fans of all ages.

Best known as one of the key figures in Detroit's techno scene, his recent recordings namecheck Sun Ra, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band. Craig's not namedropping to pick up some jazz cred, but simply paying homage to a lineage of Afro-American electronically influenced music that died a death with the advent of fusion and 90mph Minimoog solos.
