Features Song Lyrics for The Whitest Boy Alive's Rules album.
Rules is the second and final album by indie pop band The Whitest Boy Alive. It was recorded in Punta Burros Nayarit, Mexico, where the band was staying to rest after a long tour. In early 2009, Australian radio station Triple J named Rules their feature album of the week. The track "1517" was featured in FIFA 10, the video game by EA Sports. Keep a Secret" (4:08). Rollercoaster Ride" (2:40). High on the Heels" (3:20).
The Whitest Boy Alive was a German-Norwegian musical group based in Berlin that was active from 2003 to 2014. The band was composed of singer and guitarist Erlend Øye of Kings of Convenience, bassist Marcin Öz, drummer Sebastian Maschat, and Daniel Nentwig on Rhodes piano and Crumar. The Whitest Boy Alive started as an electronic dance music project in 2003 in Berlin, but since slowly developed into a band with no programmed elements.
From the inlay: "The creation of rules is more creative than the destruction of them. Creation demands a higher level of reasoning and draws connections between cause and effect. Recorded at Glass Cube Studio Nayarit/Mexico 2007 and Funkhaus Berlin 2008. Mixed at Villa Qrella Berlin Pankow. The chorus of courage is inspired by "Push Push" by Rockers Hi-Fi.

Even in shifting from Kings of Convenience's acoustic pastoralism to the plugged-in, dance-friendly pop of the Whitest Boy Alive, Øye seemed like he was aiming not for bars or nightclubs, but the headphones of people walking down empty streets. The atmosphere of 2006's Dreams made TWBA a surprising side-project debut, but sophomore album Rules expands the mood just a little- and, in the process, the sound gets a little more crowded
But sound is one thing and spirit another, and the album feels, on the whole, more tired than inspired. A handful of marginal highs aside (the minor urgency of "Courage," the fluid sobriety of "Gravity"), it's hard to shake the feeling that Rules would be a lot more satisfying if it broke a few more.
