Sean Westergaard, AMG Although keyboardist and bandleader Sun Ra died in 1993, releases and reissues from his massive oeuvre are still pouring out, much to the benefit of Ra fans, as well as those who are about to become Ra fans and don't yet know it. The original Space Probe: A Tonal View of Times Tomorrow, Vol. 1 was released in 1974 and considered a rarity among Ra recordings. The reissue has extended the original LP with even rarer tracks, making the new Space Probe a special release indeed.

Originally issued in 1974, with altered contents, as The Outerspaceways Inc. (A Tonal View Of Times Tomorrow, Vol. 3), this album serves as a collection of recordings, some of them in front of an audience, made by Sun Ra in ‘66 and ‘68 with his Arkestra. Sharp rampings into high-energy tangents and near-abrasive pushes from the wind instruments and piano lend the performances a manic edge at times, though there’s also several lengthy passages of extremely subdued progressions, making for a mood of conflicted depression and outbursts
