Rock 'n' Roll is the sixth studio album by John Lennon. Released in 1975, it is an album of late 1950s and early 1960s songs as covered by Lennon. Recording the album was problematic and spanned an entire year: Phil Spector produced sessions in October 1973 at A&M Studios, and Lennon produced sessions in October 1974 at Record Plant Studios (East).
On Rock ‘n’ Roll, John Lennon does nothing but interpret old rock. The Beatles didn’t care whether they got the music right so long as they got the feeling. Lennon can recreate the music correctly ( Be-Bop-A-Lula ), but never catches the feeling. At the bottom, there’s the now famous quote (the best thing about the album, really) from Dr. Winston O’Boogie: You Should Have Been There. John Lennon was, but sounds like he’s forgotten what it was like. In making an album about his past, he has wound up sounding like a man without a past.
Rock and Roll is a musical genre and lifestyle which first originated in the 1950's and has since evolved in popular culture throughout the years proceeding. Hail, hail rock and roll; deliver me from the days of ol. ong live rock and roll; the beat of the drums, loud and bold. Rock, rock, rock and roll; the feelin' is there, body and soul.
The seeds for the making Rock ‘N’ Roll go back to 1969 and a song John Lennon composed for the Beatles’ Abbey Road album. Before a judge could hear the case it was settled out of court, with an agreement, according to an announcement by Levy, that John had to record three songs by Big Seven publishers on his next album . The sessions proved to be somewhat eventful, due in no small measure to Phil Spector having been drafted in to produce the album and to help pick some of the songs.
The Rock 'N' Roll album was completed quickly, in five days from 21-25 October. Lennon produced as the band performed versions of Be-Bop-A-Lula, Stand By Me, Rip It Up/Ready Teddy, Ain't That A Shame, Do You Wanna Dance?, Slippin' And Slidin', Peggy Sue, Bring It On Home To Me/Send Me Some Lovin' and Ya Ya. They also taped a non-album b-side, Move Over Ms L, and Lennon overdubbed a new lead vocal onto Just Because. The release of Rock 'N' Roll should thereafter have been a straightforward affair, but for the involvement of Morris Levy
John Lennon released 'Rock 'N' Roll' in February 1975. Rock 'N' Roll even has its roots in the record the Beatles made after they recorded most of Let It Be. Lennon borrowed and altered a line from Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me" for his Abbey Road song "Come Together," the "Here come old flat-top " one – which got Berry's music publisher, Morris Levy, and his legal team scrambling for some sort of retribution.
