Denis James Matthews Glover, one of the most spirited, versatile and influential figures in New Zealand literature, was born at Dunedin on 9 December 1912. He was the third of four children of Irish-born Henry Lawrence Glover, a dentist, and his wife, Lyla Jean Matthews. In 1932 Glover formed the Caxton Club to pursue the study of printing and typography, and the following year he published one issue of a student magazine, Oriflamme. Glover had an Elizabethan breadth of talent and fullness of character. He was, among other things, scholar, adventurer, typographer, publisher, poet, author, critic, raconteur, performer, drunkard and lusty lover.
Denis Glover wrote New Zealand's most famous poem, yet his work has been out of print for many years. This fresh selection from his verse includes 'The Magpies' along with a wide variety of other poems, lyrical and satirical. Bill Manhire's selection is based on Glover's own 1981 Selected Poems, and it reveals a richer and far more lively writer than the one usually found in anthologies.
Denis Glover emerged as a poet in New Zealand in the 1930s, one of the new artistic generation of modernists and nationalists. A product of two of New Zealand’s elite secondary schools - Auckland Grammar School and Christ’s College - he graduated with a degree in English and Greek from Canterbury University College, where he was for a time assistant lecturer in English. In World War Two he was seconded to the Royal Navy, rising to the rank of, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions during the Normandy invasion. Arawata Bill: A Sequence of Poems, Pegasus Press, 1953. Sings Harry and Other Poems, Caxton Press, 1951. The Wind and the Land: Poems 1934-44, Caxton Press, 1945.
Arawata Bill (1865-1947) was a pioneering New Zealand folk hero . His nickname Arawata Bill was gained from his courageous explorations (at the beginning of last century) of the rough terrains in south west of South Island, other nicknames were Hoopla Bill and By Christmas (the latter being his common expression when upset or surprised, being extremely courteous and well-mannered, he never swore!).
