It’s our first album, and a lot of these songs have been written over so many years. They have been floating around, just parts of them, for a while. It’s how they say that you have your entire life to make your first album. That is the case here, really, and a lot of the themes naturally come from loss of innocence and moving into adulthood and the experiences and fears and excitement, all that comes with that.

In a press release from the alt-rock trio, they stated, It feels great to finally be releasing our debut record. The band also dropped the comical music video for their second single - the up-tempo, self-deprecating rock track Scrawny - directed by Dillon Dowde.

Wallows' began working on "Nothing Happens" in 2018, shortly after releasing their first EP "Spring". Some of the songs, such as "Remember When", feature lyrics previously used under the band's old name and songs, "The Narwhals".

A trio of childhood friends who had been playing music together since they were middle-schoolers, Wallows made their debut under the moniker with a handful of stand-alone singles in 2017. The first one, "Pleaser," went viral and was followed by a major-label recording contract. These quick successes were almost certainly helped along by press coverage surrounding lead singer/guitarist Dylan Minnette, who had just premiered as the lead in the first season of the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. (Bandmate Braeden Lemasters is also an experienced screen.

Popular radio music often has one punch line that listeners chant out loud, but Nothing Happens steers away from this trend, emphasizing more on the instrumentals and nostalgia factor of ‘80s new wave. Tongue-in-cheek selective vocabulary with a heavy accompaniment, Scrawny is one of the most light-hearted pieces on the album even if its guitar riffs scare you a bit. It’s a fun, punchy song that shifts the band’s twisty, focus to a more celebratory jam. It’s short and direct in its lyrics but gives Nothing Happens a surprising change of pace.
