I’m not sure there’s a better way to discuss this album than start with this line from I’ve Got Some Friends, one of the many lic songs that appear on Love Is Simple, their third album. They’ve always had an ear for the more obscure side of musical development and this album is no different, though it sees the number of ideas crammed into one album slightly down on last years meandering opus Meek Warrior.

With Love is Simple Akron Family seem to take a kind of organic quality, not too heavy with intention, and craft eclectic, energetic songs. Love, Love, Love (Everyone) begins the record with a down-tempo country croon about, well, loving everyone. It's more of an intro track than anything, but it succeeds in setting the tone for the rest of the album: a sense of pure freedom which allows the band to slip into different genres. A few seconds of noise brings in one of the highlights of the album, I've Got Some Friends. The song is more upbeat than anything heard yet on the record. Akron/Family is a folk-influenced experimental rock band that formed in 2002, and is currently based in New York on the Dead Oceans label. Though each member of the band - Miles Seaton, Seth Olinsky, Dana Janssen and formerly Ryan Vanderhoof - can be relegated to loosely defined roles (drummer, guitarist, bassist, vocalist), all of them in fact play several instruments and sing, as evidenced by their shows and recorded material. When a band as talented and ambitious as Akron/Family claim they are trying, with their new album Love Is Simple, to better capture their live sound, it seems like a let-down. It is a such a banal, overstated idea. Many a band have sought to capture their live sound, and all too often this means more volume and less complication. But lucky for us, Akron/Family is smarter than that. They know that their live show is a far cry from the work on their first, eponymous album.

Through seemingly constant touring and regular work with Michael Gira’s Angels Of Light, the urban folkies in Brooklyn’s Akron/Family are a (mostly) bearded (always) busy bunch. Which is why it’s hard to believe the watch-worthy quartet’s forthcoming Love Is Simple is just their second full-length release. No way that’s possible ? Let’s recount: There’s the self-titled debut, Gira backup band spot on The Angels of Light Sing (Other People), and that excellent split album with Angels (half their songs, half them playing behind Gira) ? all of that appeared in 2005.
