The Family Cat were a British independent band, formed in Stoke Newington, London in 1988. Three members were originally from Cornwall, one from Plymouth and one from Southampton. The band played live for five years and recorded three albums, the mini-album Tell 'Em We're Surfin', (produced by The Jam's drummer Rick Buckler ) released on South London independent label Bad Girl Records, and its full-length follow-ups, Furthest from the Sun and Magic Happens, released by Dedicated Records.
Sonic Youth once claimed that The Family Cat were their favourite UK rock band, so it is about time that there was a collection of their finest tracks. Compiled by Paul Frederick (aka Fred) and John Graves this 2CD set tracks the band’s career from the first single, Tom Verlaine, on Bad Girl through to previously unreleased tracks from the abandoned 4th album. All the band’s singles feature including the classic Steamroller, and Colour Me Grey and River Of Diamonds which feature PJ Harvey on backing vocals

Nineties indie five-piece The Family Cat have just announced the release of a new best of. Five Lives Left (artwork above) will be a two-disc affair, taking in singles, key album tracks, b-sides, BBC sessions and previously unreleased material, due for release on January 28 via 3 Loop Music.
Five Lives Left, compiled by lead singer Paul Frederick (aka Fred) and bassist John Graves, is a 2CD set tracking the band’s career from Tom Verlaine through to previously unreleased tracks from the album abandoned when the band split in January 1995. Fred said We chose all the singles and some alternative versions of a lot of the LP tracks, plus unreleased songs from the sessions which would have become the third full LP if the band had carried on after Magic Happens.
