If ever there was an enigma in American music, John Stewart is it. How many people can claim to have been the last member of the Kingston Trio and become its frontman, to have been the official musician for the Robert Kennedy campaign, to write hits for the Monkees and Fleetwood Mac, to be admired by Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Kinky Friedman, Emmylou Harris, and the entire . Only on the material from Bombs Away Dream Babies with its smash "Gold" and "Midnight Wind" do the sounds embrace the modern day - yet even here the lyrics don't.

Bombs Away Dream Babies. The two unknowns were Lindsey Buckingham, who provides the great guitar on this Stewart-penned track, while John duetted on vocals with Stevie Nicks. A great song and fine example of late 1970's soft rock.

LOS ANGELES - John Stewart, who wrote the Monkees hit Daydream Believer and helped create the style that came to be called Americana, died on Saturday at a San Diego hospital. He was 68. Mr. Stewart, who came to prominence in the 1960s as a member of the folk group the Kingston Trio, had a brain aneurysm, according to a statement on the group’s Web site, kingstontrio. Stewart, who left the trio shortly before the Monkees released Daydream Believer in 1967, went on to record nearly four dozen solo albums, including California Bloodlines and Bombs Away Dream Babies.

The follow up album, "Dream Babies Go Hollywood" (1980) with backing by Linda Ronstadt and contributions from Phil Everly was an attempt at the same (apparently) but it failed. Nevertheless the success of this album, gave Stewart a boost to his career and sustained him (as a marginal artist with a faithful following) for the next couple of decades. He kept writing and recording and for that we have to be thankful. There are undiscovered joys all over his albums.
