Tracklist: 01 Symphony No. 9 in E minor ('From the New World'), B. 178 (Op. 95) I. Adagio - Allegro molto 02 Symphony No. 95) II. Largo 03 Symphony No. 95) III. Scherzo: Molto vivace 04 Symphony No. . All you need is profound musicality, a deep love of life, and an overwhelming urge to communicate. These are all qualities that Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra demonstrate in full in this 2000 Channel Classics recording of the composer's Eighth and Ninth symphonies

Ivan Fischer leads the Budapest Festival Orchestra in propulsive performances that are gripping throughout as Dvorak's genius for melody and motion unfold. Apparently there are older recordings with a richer, fuller orchestral sound - Fischer's is lean and fleet. I can't imagine a slower, fuller sound would be as exciting. The engineering and production of these 2000 Budapest recordings are outstanding. It was a Gramophone selection on its release, and Arkiv Music still features it as the top recommendation for these symphonies. I recommend this disc without reservation - but. The Ninth is also excellent - not a first choice for me, but with so many fine versions of these symphonies from Talich, Kubelik, Szell, Karajan, Bernstein, Walter and others, there can't really be a top choice

The third movement of the 'New World' is a good example of the standard of performance on offer here. The scherzo itself is biting and brilliant while the trio is charming and delightfully poised, featuring some lovely work both from the strings and the wind. The eighth, my own favourite, receives a most winning, lyrical performance, typified by the warmth with which the gorgeous cello melody is delivered at the outset. Budapest Festival Orchestra In less than 30 years the Budapest Festival Orchestra – founded in 1983 by Iván Fischer and Zoltán Kocsis – has established itself as one of the ten leading orchestras of the world.
