His subsequent albums, including Rastaman Vibration, Exodus, Kaya, Survival and the last album released during his lifetime, Uprising, were big international sellers. In 1972, Bob Marley and the Wailers had their big break with a recording deal for their first full album, Catch a Fire. They went on tour in the . opening for Bruce Springsteen and Sly and the Family Stone, but the band was eventually fired for being more popular than the headliners. Despite his rising star status, Marley stayed out of the spotlight, trying to keep the focus on the music - the powerful feeling of its message - rather than the man, the messenger. With the limited time he had left, Marley wanted to return to his home country. Sadly, he didn't make the journey: Bob Marley passed away in Miami, Florida on May 11, 1981.

In the wake of the assassination attempt, Marley and his band left Jamaica and settled in London for two years, where he recorded 1977's Exodus. However, if Marley had become more wary in his point of view (and not without good cause), his skill as a songwriter was as strong as ever, and Exodus boasted more than a few classics, including the title song, "Three Little Birds," "Waiting in Vain," and "Turn Your Lights Down Low," tunes that defined Marley's gift for sounding laid-back.

Confident in taking a stand, Bob Marley was not afraid to sing with moral authority. Sure enough, the day after I left Hope Road for London, four politically motivated gunmen broke into the Hope Road haven, shooting Bob, his wife Rita and manager Don Taylor, and escaped.
