Third Ear Band were a British musical group formed in London during the mid-1960s. Their line-up initially consisted of violin, cello, oboe and percussion. Most of their performances were instrumental and partly improvised. Nevertheless, their records for the Harvest label, Alchemy and Third Ear Band, achieved some popularity, after which they found some success creating soundtrack music for films.

Their self-titled, second album is probably their definitive statement, consisting of four lengthy tracks devoted to the primary elements ("Air," "Earth, " "Fire, " "Water"). The feeling is one of improvised (though well-conceived) pieces that build up from initial drones to multi-layered ragas built around the same initial patterns.
The Third Ear Band were one of the most challenging and distinctive bands to emerge from the UK underground music scene in the late 1960's. Championed by DJ John Peel, their music is characterised by improvised and sometimes atonal improvisations on tabla, oboe, violin and cello. The band was formed from the ashes of the psychedelic group Hydrogen Jukebox in 1968 by Glen Sweeney (tabla/percussion).

The London-based Third Ear Band grew up in the free jazz/prog music scene of the sixties, although their music was more eastern influenced, drawing heavily on Indian ragas, and always acoustic (after their electric equipment was stolen early on). Recorded live in 1988, but not released until 1993, after the band reunited with founding member, percussionist Glen Sweeney and featuring Paul Minns on oboe, Mick Carter on guitar and Alan Samuel on violin. Still in the 'acid raga' vein of their 60s/70s work for Harvest (home of Pink Floyd and many other prog acts), to the delight of their.
