Johansen wrote some songs (some with ex-Doll cohort Sylvain Sylvain), but together a band, went on the road and shortly thereafter the self-titled album was released. One first listen it was disappointing, for two reasons.

David Johansen is a 1978 album by the rock musician David Johansen and his first solo album following his tenure as lead singer of the New York Dolls. The album was released on Blue Sky Records, a sub-label of Columbia Records that was associated with Johnny and Edgar Winter. David Johansen also features fellow New York Doll guitarist Sylvain Sylvain, who was a member of the David Johansen Band at that time. Sylvain co-wrote four of the songs with Johansen

There are also typographical errors. When works were reissued on cassette titles were occasionally different.

David Johansen's first solo album was a triumph, a savvy blend of the New York Dolls' swagger and a more conventional but no less idiosyncratic hard rock style that left plenty of room for Johansen's eclectic musical outlook. Unfortunately, it didn't sell, and for his second post-Dolls release Johansen and producer Mick Ronson aimed for something with a bit more polish and a better chance of getting onto the radio.

Mostly self-produced, the rapper explained to The Guardian that he kept an overarching narrative theme in mind while writing the album.
