It's Only Rock 'n Roll is the 12th British and 14th American studio album by The Rolling Stones, released in 1974. It was the last Rolling Stones album for guitarist Mick Taylor and the songwriting and recording of the album's title track had a connection to Taylor's eventual replacement, Ronnie Wood. The album also marked the 10th anniversary since the release of the band's debut album, The Rolling Stones.

It’s a rock ‘n’ roll album because it’s so goddamn violent. At its simplest level the album deals with the psychosis of being in a rock ‘n’ roll band and having made it as a star - and it does that better than the Who’s opus devoted exclusively to that subject, Quadrophenia. At another level it uses the relationship between a band and its audience as a metaphor for the parasitic relations between a man and a woman. The verses to It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll sound like an assault on the audience. There are five impressions of the Rolling Stones, but the one that best captures the feeling of It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll isn’t of the Rolling Stones at all, but of Frank Sinatra. On the last page, Sinatra is standing in the dark shadows of stage lighting with a mike in one hand and a drink in the other.
On 1974’s It's Only Rock 'n' Roll by The Rolling Stones you have the problem of The Big Three . They are: If You Can't Rock Me. Ain't Too Proud to Beg. It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (But I Like It). I choose If You Can’t Rock Me based on the music itself. The title track nearly got my vote, because of the wild video the Stones made for it at the time.
It's uneven, but at times It's Only Rock 'n Roll catches fire. The songs and performances are stronger than those on Goats Head Soup; the tossed-off numbers sound effortless, not careless.

The track is the title single from the album It's Only Rock and Roll (1974). Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and produced by the Glimmer Twins, the song went straight to number one in the US charts when it was released. The video features Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor dressed in sailor suits performing in a circus tent that fills with bubbles. The video was directed by filmmaker Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who also directed the promo videos "Neighbours", "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Child Of The Moon"
