Don't Stop Believin'" is a song by American rock band Journey, originally released as their signature song and the second single from their seventh album Escape (1981). It became a number 9 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 on its original release after entering the chart at position 56 on 31st October 1981. In the United Kingdom, the song was not a Top 40 hit on its original release; however, it reached number 6 in 2009.
Don’t Stop Believin' was released as a single off of Journey’s hugely successful album Escape. To many, this song is considered the definitive Journey track. Although the track only reached at the time of its release, it has grown more popular as the years have gone by through its use in movies, television (most notably Glee) and pop culture in general. Irving Azoff, who had just made the Eagles a fortune for their reunion album, was brought in to manage the band. The future looked bright. Everything changed when Perry took a long hike in Hawaii and felt a horrible pain in his hip as he reached the top of a mountain. I just started crying like a baby. I cried for the times we could have had together. I cried for the times that I took for granted. Perry wrote Don’t Stop Believin’ with Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain and guitarist Neal Schon in 1981. The title phrase came from Cain’s father, something he’d say to encourage his son to keep going when he was a young musician eking out an existence in . Cain said he drew inspiration from characters he knew in the Sunset Strip rock scene of the early 1970s: These were the streetlight people living just to find emotion of the song’s lyrics.
