Regarding the title, Gahan says we all have a consciousness, and anytime we want we can stop and choose to feel what’s really going on there. We all know when something’s not right.

After nearly four decades fronting synth-rock godheads Depeche Mode, the singer, 54, seemed happy to settle in and look back on some of the group’s best-known songs, from their early-’80s postpunk experiments to the politically charged lead single from their 14th studio album, Spirit, out now. Read on for his recollections of throwing pans down stairwells, saying yes to Johnny Cash, and censoring rogue horse tails.

In 30 years there are bad times and good times. We actually really enjoyed the making of 'Sounds of the Universe'. Sometimes through a bad period you can produce great material. This time, I think we managed to enjoy it and produce something that's pretty good. Things came together with this album to give it a better edge.

Album opener Going Backwards sets the tone for the album. It’s a strong start, their strongest opener since Playing The Angel’s A Pain That I’m Used to, all sparse guitar lines and eerie electronics. In a recent interview, the band said that James Ford had wanted a ten track album but they wanted more and the next two tracks, Poorman and No More (This Is Is The Last Time) are two of the tracks that seem a bit unnecessary and perhaps losing Poorman and a Dave Gahan track might have made this a better, tighter record. What Depeche Mode have done with Spirit however is continue to push themselves, refuse to rest on their laurels and produce an album that is relevant both sonically and lyrically and that is perhaps more than most people expected. Persevere with this record as there is a lot to love here.

Depeche Mode introduced itself to the world in 1981 with the catchy synth-pop of ‘Speak & Spell. Martin Gore’s writing well matched Gahan’s sensual vocals, and beloved records such as ‘Construction Time Again’ and ‘Violator, made them one the era’s biggest acts. Spirit’ is Depeche Mode’s 14th album, and their video for Where’s the Revolution was directed by their longtime collaborator, Anton Corbijn. Interviewer Joseph Patel asks the singer about his relationship with the famed photographer, who Gahan deems a fifth member of the band.
