The Blues, Pot Belly (1996). Soul Pride by James Brown (1969).

Pot Belly" was the one I seem to remember the most from these nights. Then into a little stepping breakbeat that worked out with just some extra percussion layered on top. Nothing special, in many ways, but still, it pushed the boundaries out from what we were all used to back then. And in many ways, it reminds me of the other tracks from CERT18 that were being released .

Another minimalist track that Fabio used to play down at Speed (Fabio and Bukem's night that used to be held down at the Mars Bar on Sutton Row just off Soho Square in London) back in 1995/96. "Pot Belly" was the one I seem to remember the most from these nights... With its quirky little reverb flute loop intro... Slowly building up with some jazzed-out sound stabs... Then into a little stepping breakbeat that worked out with just some extra percussion layered on top. Nothing special, in many ways, but still, it pushed the boundaries out from what we were all used to back then. I still love this number... And in many ways, it reminds me of the other tracks from CERT18 that were being released i.e. Primary Motive's "Red Moon/Funk 78" and "Wise Moments/Life". It's a great minimalist number to mix into tracks... And amen tracks just beg to be mixed into this!"The Blues" just oozes that usual classic Nookie production style... Again, another Gavin Cheung stomper... The way he chops those breaks and layers the vocals over the top... Sneaking in a piano rift here and there too... It's all great stuff. Also, the sample "Makes Me Wonder If We Could Start A New" seemed to be very in tune with the time in which it was made... Harking the different step that Speed was setting on the Drum & Bass circuit... Breaking away from all that old skool ragga-muffin style jungle (which I still love, it has to be said) that was starting to get a wee bit heavy, dark and over done... At the Mars bar on Thursday nights there was a chance for Drum & Bass fans to dance to a new step... A new kind of fresh, Jazzed-out vibe to swing those nights away to. There, Fabio and Bukem were starting something new for sure.
