Johnny B. Goode" is a 1958 rock-and-roll song written and first recorded by Chuck Berry. The song was a major hit, peaking at number two on Billboard magazine's Hot R&B Sides chart and number eight on its Hot 100 chart. Johnny B. Goode" is considered one of the most recognizable songs in the history of popular music.
Chuck Berry initially wrote "Johnny B. Goode" as a tribute to his pianist Johnnie Johnson. Johnson played on many other recordings by Berry, but Lafayette Leake played the piano on this song. Though, the song is partly autobiographical, as the main character is Chuck Berry himself, as he revealed to Rolling Stone in 1972. The original words, of course, 'That little colored boy could play. I changed it to 'country boy' - or else it wouldn't get on the radio. More details were changed: Berry was from St. Louis, while Johnny is from Louisiana. Chuck Berry also titled his 1969 studio album "Concerto in 'B Goode'". The song spent 15 weeks on the American charts, though it didn't rise higher the 8th position. In 1977, NASA sent a copy of the song on the Voyager space probe as a representation of the best in American culture.
Originally released in 1958 and then re-released on Chuck's 1962 album 'Twist', Johnny B. Goode arguably in itself upped the level for Rock music and solidified Chuck Berry's status as a pioneer. Keith Richards later said that Chuck succeeded in releasing effectively the same song over and over again after this one - but the question must be posed, when it's this great why not? He lived at 2520 Goode Avenue, which in 1986 was renamed Annie Malone Drive after the woman who financed a children's home on the street. The case was dismissed in 2002, with the judge ruling that too much time passed between the writing of the songs and the lawsuit.
