Ralph Earl Sutton (November 4, 1922 – December 30, 2001) was an American jazz pianist born in Hamburg, Missouri. He was a stride pianist in the tradition of James P. Johnson and Fats Waller. Sutton had a stint as a session musician with Jack Teagarden's band before joining the US Army during World War II. After the war, he played at various venues in Missouri, eventually ending up at Eddie Condon's club in Greenwich Village.
Ralph Sutton, one of the greatest stride pianists of the past four decades, is in excellent form on this European set. Joined on some selections by guitarist Lars Blach, bassist Hugo Rasmussen and drummer Svend Erik Norregard, Sutton takes two of the 12 songs unaccompanied and romps through a program of veteran standards that is highlighted by "Thou Swell" and "Jeepers Creepers. The 1995 CD reissue augments the original LP program with three alternate takes and a 13th selection: a duet version of "Old Fashioned Love" with bassist Rasmussen.

Ralph Sutton made many visits to England during his long career, though this solo performance at the Fox & Hounds in 1975 seems to be one of the few records he made overseas. The veteran stride pianist is in top form, saluting two earlier giants of the genre (Willie "The Lion" Smith and Fats Waller) with rousing interpretations of several of their compositions. But Sutton also displays his lyrical side, particularly during the first two songs of a medley of Willard Robison's songs and Bix Beiderbecke's brilliant "In the Dark.
