The selections on Call of the Midnight Sun are pretty straightforward fare for an exotica album, ranging from pure exotica with bird calls and jungle sounds ("Black Orchid") to show tunes ("Hello Dolly") and standards ("The Girl from Ipanema"). While there's nothing inherently eyebrow-raising about these choices, the performances are uniformly excellent, resulting in a disc well worth seeking out for the exotica collector.

Midnight Sun" (1954) was originally an instrumental composed by Lionel Hampton and Sonny Burke in 1947 and is now considered a jazz standard. Subsequently, Johnny Mercer wrote the words to the song. One famous recording of the song with the Mercer lyrics is by Ella Fitzgerald on her 1957 album Like Someone in Love. Fitzgerald recorded the song again for her 1964 album Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Johnny Mercer Songbook. She recorded it for a third time in 1975 with jazz pianist Oscar Peterson on the Pablo release Ella and Oscar. Arthur Lyman – Call of the Midnight Sun (1965). Rebecca Martin – Middlehope (2001). I ran across this LP at a thrift store yesterday for 15 cents (half off sale!), so I guess there are still a few of these left in the wild. For most tracks, a quiet mood predominates, accentuated by soft vibes or xylophone, but many of these songs contain exciting little bits of flute, celeste, harmonica, or percussion to spice things up. Ending track "Get Me to the Church on Time" contains a running rhythm and the liveliest xylophone soloing, but the standout is side two opener "Black Orchid," a Cal Tjader tune handled masterfully by Lyman's band. This song begins with aplomb, then shifts into full on exotica mode, building into a grand finale. Cal would have been proud. My copy of this LP is very quiet and instruments can be heard clearly, but I would love to hear this recording in high definition.
