Norma Ann Winstone MBE (born 23 September 1941) is an English jazz singer and lyricist. In a career spanning more than 50 years she is best known for her wordless improvisations. Born as Norma Short in Bow, East London, she began singing in bands around Dagenham in the early 1960s, before joining Michael Garrick's band in 1968. Her first recording came the following year, with Joe Harriott. In 1971 she was voted top singer in the Melody Maker Jazz Poll
Singing better than ever while exploring the deeper regions of human strength and frailty, Winstone and her outstanding, drummerless group featuring the excellent team of Italian pianist Glauco Venier and German reedman Klaus Gesing, are simply matched in heaven, high above the clouds and this mortal coil.

Norma Winstone: Distances by C. Michael Bailey, published on July 17, 2008. Practice brings one closer to perfection. British singer Norma Winstone has enjoyed a very prolific 35-plus year career that has been divided among a number of recording labels. Her recordings with John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler in the form of the group Azimuth brought her international exposure and recognition. These formats were the unusual combination of voice, piano, and either horn or reeds. This spare instrumentation and arrangement qualifies what Winstone does as chamber jazz
Norma Winstone, Distances. British singer Norma Winstone hasn't recorded for ECM in a decade, but her understatement, stillness, technical precision and quiet soulfulness have always made her sound like an ECM artist. Winstone has sung straighter, and revisited standards more in recent times, but this is a more idiosyncratically personal reverie - on beautiful material inspired by Coltrane, Pasolini, Cole Porter, Peter Gabriel, Erik Satie and more.

Norma Winstone's refreshingly honest and understated vocal talents have gone largely under-recognized in the United States, but with her return to the ECM label, perhaps listeners worldwide will give her another try.
