Pickin' & Fiddlin' is the third album by American bluegrass group The Dillards, recorded with up and coming fiddle player Byron Berline. The album is entirely instrumental, with no vocals. The group had been unhappy with Elektra because they felt pressure from the company not to innovate, as they were beginning to do (and would eventually record on Wheatstraw Suite), and because they felt that Elektra was not doing enough to promote their records.

The Dillards' third album was recorded at a time when they were getting ready to expand beyond the boundaries of bluegrass into folk-rock and country-rock. It's a little peculiar, then, that Pickin' and Fiddlin' with Byron Berline gives no indication of the directions they were about to follow. Instead, it's traditional, wholly instrumental bluegrass, with the fiddle of the young Byron Berline both taking prominence and giving the arrangements a different feel than other recordings the Dillards had made as a bluegrass band.

The Dillards are an American bluegrass band from Salem, Missouri, originally consisting of Douglas Flint "Doug" Dillard (born March 6, 1937, Salem, Missouri - May 16, 2012 Nashville, Tennessee) (banjo), Rodney Adean "Rod" Dillard (born May 18, 1942, Salem, Missouri) (guitar, dobro), Roy 'Dean' Web. ore . .

1965’s Pickin’ And Fiddlin’ was so-titled because red-hot violinist Byron Berline entered the fray, sawing brilliantly away on a selection of rags, reels and hornpipes.

In 1965, he recorded the album Pickin' and Fiddlin' with the Dillards. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1967 with a teaching degree in Physical Education, and joined the Bluegrass Boys shortly after. Byron Berline first met Bill Monroe in 1965 and was offered a job then. Berline joined forces with guitarist Dan Crary, banjo player John Hickman a and others to form Byron Berline and Sundance. Their self-titled debut album was released on MCA Records in 1976. A young Vince Gill later joined the band on mandolin. The album Live at McCabes was released in 1978. In 1979, Berline had a small role as a country musician in the film, The Rose.

The Dillards' third US album on Elektra Records, released in 1965, was completely instrumental and featured a young Byron Berline fiddling on everything. Also, listen to the incredible syncopated guitar runs in Tom and Jerry. Much of the Dillards' sound was a result of Doug's use of a raised head banjo and of Rodney's brilliant syncopated runs. Tonight, I will kneel next to my bed, fold my hands, and THANK THE MAKER, that in 1965 he maneuvered this specific five MASTERS into a recording studio together, to document until the end of time, what the American Bluegrass fiddle tune genre is SUPPOSED to sound like.
