The album opens with Schubert's last sonata in B-flat (D960), published posthumously. Many consider this to be the greatest Schubert sonata, and it has been widely recorded. The album closes with a less well known sonata in A (D664), composed in 1819 when Schubert was 22. In between are the Moments Musicaux (D780), a set of six short pieces in a variety of moods, and two sets of Impromptus (D899 and D935) composed in 1827 or possibly earlier. Kempff is equally fine in his interpretations of the impromptus and the moments musicaux, always putting subtle lyricism ahead of dramatic display. His rendering of the G-flat impromptu is one of the best that I've ever heard. Occasionally, though, Kempff overdoes it, as in the A-flat minuet impromptu of D935, where a more direct approach with steady tempo is called for, rather than the rubato that Kempff employs.

Franz Schubert's Impromptus are a series of eight pieces for solo piano composed in 1827. They were published in two sets of four impromptus each: the first two pieces in the first set were published in the composer's lifetime as Op. 90; the second set was published posthumously as Op. 142 in 1839 (with a dedication added by the publisher to Franz Liszt)
