The death of Smetana's daughter Bedřiška was the emotional impetus behind the composition of the Trio for Piano and Strings in G minor, Op. 15. After Bedřiška succumbed to scarlet fever on 6 September 1855, Smetana was devastated; the composer immersed himself in composition, producing the trio soon enough for it to be performed later that year.

She had shown great aptitude for music despite being only 4 years old. He had lost a younger daughter in 1854, and yet another daughter only eight months old in 1856. Smetana dedicated his only piano trio to his oldest daughter Bedřiška in 1855. The first theme is drenched in G minor and grows from the violin solo into a passionate outpouring.
