Cheap Trick is the first studio album released in 1977 by the American rock band Cheap Trick. It was their debut album for Epic Records, produced by Jack Douglas. The album did not reach the Billboard 200 chart but did "bubble under" at number 207 for one week in April 1977. Most of the songs have a more raw sound akin to hard rock bands of the period compared to the group's later more polished power pop style, and the song lyrics deal with more extreme subject matter than later albums.

The story of Cheap Trick’s early days could feasibly be re-told by replacing the band’s name with Peter Frampton’s. A handful of albums garner critical acclaim but sell poorly, a jittery label wonders when and from where the breakthrough might come, before a game-changing live release provides the catapult to Top 10 glory. Like The Raspberries and Todd Rundgren before them, Cheap Trick worked from a power pop template; in thrall to The Beatles but imbuing their own music with the broader rock hues favoured by American FM radio.

Spanning two discs and 36 tracks, it is the most generous hits collection yet assembled, but it still falls short of being a definitive overview. The real problem is that the collection loses steam on the second disc, which covers the '80s and '90s. The band has chosen to bypass several charting singles for album tracks, which may frustrate some chart-bound listeners, but it does make for a disc that's stronger overall. Still, it's hard to deny that the material on the second disc is simply not as good as that on the first, which makes this collection a bit too lopsided to be consistently enjoyable.
