Beyond the Valley from Anja Schneider (2008) (CD, Double LP, 2 x 12'').

Mobilee co-founder Anja Schneider travels BEYOND THE VALLEY for her debut, hinting at some tribal xylophone tones on "Safari," while "Mole" pops up for a more minimal experience. A few voices punctuate the title track, and "Gimlet" returns us to spare, jacking instrumentals. Cascabel" dances along on its melodic line, the "Belize" throbs with an understated energy

Beyond the Valley Tracklist. About Beyond the Valley. Beyond the Valley Q&A.

Anja Schneider's ‘Belize’ from last year was one of those moments when a fairly standard sounding techno track lifts off, spinning away from its recognisable elements into pure ecstasy. This then was the challenge for Beyond the Valley: to defy her roots in tracky modern tech house and present us with something that was remarkable and playable at home. So it was with a sinking heart then that I turned the album on and listened to ‘Safari’. It's a track that screams "set opener," but without something mixing in, the melodies wander and the vectors never resolve.

A few voices punctuate the title track, and "Gimlet" returns us to spare, jacking instrumentals. "Cascabel" dances along on its melodic line, the "Belize" throbs with an understated energy. The slower and deeper "Get Away," with a vocal sample that slinks in and disappears like a sleepy cat, but "Little Red Riding Hood" brings the energy back up with a solid groover. The closing track, "Fish at Night," returns to a slower tempo, and with questionable lyrics, but its sensuousness is undiminished. Solid, if ultimately unremarkable.
