Material for The Story So Far was written on and off while touring over the course of 2014. This was first time the band wrote material together. Vocalist Parker Cannon went to practice one day and asked the rest of the band if they wanted to do a self-titled release. Guitarist William Levy said he did not know if. the album being self-titled "mean anything, really. On December 30, 2014 Pure Noise posted a summary of their 2014 releases and listed a number of bands that would release an album in 2015 – one band being The Story So Far. On March 15, 2015 it was announced The Story So Far would release a self-titled album.

The Story So Far – The Best Of is a compilation album by the English rock band Def Leppard. The album has similar tracklisting to previous compilations, however it is the first to include tracks from the band's recent studio efforts Songs from the Sparkle Lounge and Def Leppard as well as all three studio tracks from Mirror Ball – Live & More. On Record Store Day April 13, 2019, the band released volume two (disc two of the CD version) of The Story So Far.

In reality, The Story So Far vocalist probably just needed to hit pause for a while. He’d been in the band since the age of 17, and later dropped out of community college after a year of studies to hit the road and concentrate on touring full-time. Since their 2011 debut album Under Soil And Dirt exploded and made them pioneers of a then-burgeoning pop-punk resurgence, Parker, bassist Kelen Capener, guitarists Kevin Geyer and Will Levy, and drummer Ryan Torf played live and trekked across the globe for almost six years non-stop
