Description

The Peddlers were a British jazz trio of the 1960s and 1970s. The Peddlers formed in Manchester in April 1964, as a trio of Trevor Morais, Tab Martin and Roy Phillips. Morais, the drummer, had previously played with Faron's Flamingoes and Rory Storm and the Hurricanes (who had struggled to replace Ringo Starr after he had left to join The Beatles). Their cover of "Let the Sunshine In" (1965) charted on the UK Singles Chart. In 1968 they released the album Freewheelers, consisting of standards arranged by Keith Mansfield. The follow-up, 1968's Three In A Cell, included a version of "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever", from the 1965 musical of the same name, which was later sampled for its bass and Hammond organ riff.

The Peddlers - Freewheelers (256 kbps). The Peddlers were one of the most improbable success stories in British popular music of the 1960s and 1970s - sporting a spare, minimalist image (right down to their dark clothes and short hair), they played a brand of pop-jazz that was far removed from the rock 'n' roll they had played or the rock music that. was sprouting around them, but they scored enough successes to keep going for a decade and record for two different major labels
