Description

Orbits is Starkey's 3rd studio album.

Album · 2012 · 13 Songs.

And Then God Built The Cosmos 10. Crashing Sphere 11. The Shuttle 12. Magnet 13. Distant Star. Rob Jowett An exceptionally crafted album made by someone who clearly has a good understanding of music. I believe i heard that starkey is classically trained? well it certainly seems believable based on the content on offer here. if anything this leads me to my one gripe, that the more wonky peaks are often left to look a bit bare compared to the lushness of their intros and the tracks that on most albums would be considered filler. That said they're by no means bad and is certainly worth a listen.

Starkey - Orbits Starkey's early work was some of the brightest in the glorious explosion of UK dubstep circa 2007. Funny that, considering his home base isn't London, but Philadelphia. One of the US's most visible adopters of dubstep pre-Skrillex, since the days of Ephemeral Exhibits, . Intentionally or not, third album Orbits meshes past orchestral tendencies with the rabble-rousing of 2012's American dance music landscape, coming out every bit as conflicted as that sounds. Orbits continues full-bore with the science fiction themes that have always been a part of Starkey's music. An epic and pristine intro bends over into hip-hop histrionics, all slamming subs and glittering arpeggios; it's Starkey at his most punishing but also most dazzling

His new one, Orbits, manages to draw all his influences together into something more consistent, an actual streamlined signature sound that makes perfect sense given the records that preceded it. Like his 2008 Planet Mu debut album Ephemeral Exhibits and most of the singles and EPs that led up to it, he's made this album a one-man operation without collaborative efforts or vocal guest spots. Which is a roundabout way of leading up to the fact that Starkey can get away with all this because his music's so emotionally evocative, even when it's wordless. That's most of the time, though the judicious usage of his own Auto-Tuned voice on "Magnet"- "frequency is lost/ take one last breath"- is too haunting to be cloying.

If that sounds like crowded territory, it’s even more populous on his third album, Orbits.
