Description

A Guy Called Gerald ‎– Automanikk. Label: Columbia ‎– CK 46770. This a fantastic album and surprisingly underrated. Some great grooves on here, placed in its proper context, late 80s acid tunes with a detroit vibe this is a seminal disc that any lover of the period should own. It's also, in my opinion, the best disc Gerald Simpson ever released. Standout tunes are Subscape (aka Untitled), Voodoo Ray obviously, To the other side. Get this, listen to it.

A Guy Called Gerald's first album recorded for a major label, CBS/Columbia, is a journey through sampladelic acid house with a few haunted melodies gained from Gerald's exposure to Detroit techno, notably on "Subscape" and "Eyes of Sorrow. The Motor City's own Derrick May and Carl Craig provide remixing on "FX (Mayday Upgrade)," while elsewhere Kraftwerk inspirations show up on "Automanikk" and Gerald delivers a remixed version of "Voodoo Ray" named "Voodoo Ray Americas

Gerald Simpson (born 16 February 1967), better known as A Guy Called Gerald, is a British DJ, record producer and musician. He was an early member of 808 State, and later achieved success as a solo artist. He is best known for his early work in the Manchester acid house scene in the late 1980s and the track "Voodoo Ray". His style developed during the early 1990s, and his 1995 album Black Secret Technology would become a "much-touted candidate for 'best jungle album ever.

Not tall copies had the bonus 12" - This is a very good album with great production sounding fabulous on vinyl

His albums are so underrated, not exactly dance floor material but excellent techno and production

This album being the best of the bunch with that extra 12" Ltd wax - it"s all about "Moroccan Black" Proper deep house eastern groover with those North African influences! Could imagine Gerald being stone out of his face when giving this track a name like this. Find & listen then melt! You won't be disappointed - a must for any Simpson fan.

What's interesting and I'm surprised no one noted yet, was that with the UK CBS LP release, there's a bonus 12" single that's not listed on the sleeve. The A side: Voodoo Ray Americas (7:24) and B side: Moroccan Black (5:33) with both side pressed at 45rpm.

Nice that columbia released it, I don't quite get why. Gerald knows his gear, and knows how to get things moving. but They should've known, with bits like To the other side, and voodoo ray, that they weren't going to get a reese project or a mr. lee. For starters, gerald was on a much faster tempo. For historical purposes this should probably be owned, when you'll find the excuse to play it is another matter entirely. Don't look at the artwork.

A house/acid album with vocal samples and a little dubby appearance. some tracks are boring, other are very good and hypnotic. Gerald doesn't always get the right groove, but when he's in, he's in.
