Description

The vinyl-only release Starfucker (named, for no readily apparent reason, after the original title of the Rolling Stones' "Star Star") is one of them. Originally recorded in early 1994 as demos for their album Blow Out the Sun, none of these songs actually made the LP cut, so the Bus Stop label thoughtfully collected them for the Sneetches completist. Being demos, these songs are a little less pristinely produced than their proper albums, though surprisingly not by much.

The Sneetches were an American indie pop/power pop band formed in San Francisco, California, United States, in 1985, who released several albums before splitting up in the mid-1990s. The band was described by Trouser Press as "one of the most tasteful, consistently tuneful pop bands on the American scene". In 2017, All Music described The Sneetches as "one of the best classic guitar pop bands in the late '80s/early '90s.

Starfucker is the eponymous first studio album by the Portland-based indie rock band Starfucker, released on September 23, 2008 through Badman Recording Co. Josiah Hughes of Exclaim! described Starfucker as a mixture of "laidback" pop music with "epic" electronic sounds. Hughes was ecstatic towards the LP, calling it "a debut album that cannot be missed. He highlighted its "addictive pop hooks," "mature arrangements" and "pristine," "top-notch" production.

The Sneetches may have never topped the charts, but their quiescent charms continue to resonate. While they may have been an underground sensation, Omnivore Recordings collected the best songs from The Sneetches for their first ever career compilation titled "Form Of Play: A Retrospective. Form of Play may not be my dream roster of Sneetches songs, but first-person perspective aside it's a representative assemblage of what made these Bay-era popmeisters tick.
