Genius of Modern Music: Volume 2 is the name given to at least four different compilation albums by jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. Each version comprises some of Monk's recordings as a band leader for Blue Note, recorded between 1947 and 1952 (or in the case of the CDs, just 1951 and 1952). The original LP with this title was compiled in 1952. Two different CD compilations have been given this title.

Volume 1 of the two-volume Genius of Modern Music set comprises the first sessions Thelonious Monk recorded as a leader, on October 15 and 24 and November 21 of 1947. It's impossible to overstate the importance of these sessions. There are kinks to be worked out: Art Blakey's drumming is fine, but he obviously hasn't quite taken the measure of Monk's compositional genius, and on the November session, alto saxophonist Sahib Shihab employs a fat, warbly tone that sounds out of place. But the excitement of discovery permeates every measure, and Monk himself is in top form, his solos jagged and strange, yet utterly beautiful. This first volume of Genius of Modern Music, along with the second, belongs in every jazz collection.

Volume Two has a strange power to brighten a whole day by opening up memories you don’t know you have. Heavy shit for music as light as can be. Not all the songs are successful, unfortunately. The group choose a poor opener, the very average Thieves. The song itself is fine, but Deschanel’s voice struggles. Volume Two is, dare I say, actually important. Important in the sense that maybe vintage clothing and vinyl records and the whole of the touch and feel of cotton are more than just things people do to seem cool or interesting, activities or sentiments repeated without reason. The past lingers or is recyled because something about it was good. This album reinforces that fact and even though you may be able to listen to similar tunes on your local golden oldies station, there is a need to update and revisit these classic sounds from time to time.

Instead, the album artwork includes six pie charts with various images assigned to them. This is how listeners later put names to the individual tracks. In this article, I will examine the creative process behind Selected Ambient Works Volume II and discuss how it relates to an album I made several years ago. I’ll also give examples that might enlighten your own creative process. Like many great albums, Selected Ambient Works Volume II has a unique and cohesive sound throughout.
